On August 2nd and 3rd, a small group of cyclists will gather at Green Mountain College in Poultney to explore the great cycling roads in this quiet corner of Vermont.  Some of the best cycling terrain in the state and our friendly, small town atmosphere are the highlights for our participants.

We have a paved, scenic, rural route for everyone – from rolling to hilly terrain, and from 19 to 65 miles in length.  There is a choice of six rides on Saturday and seven on Sunday.  Twelve of the rides start and finish at the college, and one on Sunday has a remote start.  All of the rides have an experienced leader as well as detailed map and cues.

Eight of the thirteen rides are old favorites.

  • A 24 miler to the Slate Valley Museum and good eats on Saturday.
  • Four routes (28, 39, 52 and 60 miles) to the southeast on Saturday.
  • Three rides (19, 24 and 32 miles) to the north on Sunday.

Five of the routes are new this year.

  • A 65 mile lightly rolling route for Saturday.  A great ride for tandemists.
  • A 22 miler on Sunday with a remote start that visits Fort Ticonderoga on the New York side of Lake Champlain.
  • Three routes (40, 46 and 54 miles) that visit Hubbardton Battlefield on Sunday.

We invite you to cycle with us for two days (Saturday and Sunday) or just Saturday.  All participants enjoy a Friday night welcome reception, an ice cream social at the end of Sunday’s ride and an optional Saturday night catered dinner with entertainment.  Accommodations are available at Green Mountain College or at area B&Bs and motels.

Over the past two years we have averaged about 75 riders a year.  Our plan is to maintain a small event from year to year that keeps a friendly and inclusive atmosphere and allows the organizers to ride the routes with participants.  To do this, we limit registration to 125 riders.

“(It) was really nice being personally greeted by (the organizers) – this was an extra

nice touch for first timers.  I have been to too many events where everyone is

very cliquey and it feels awkward to be a new attendee.”   A past participant

“This is an event that combines small-town friendliness with big-time

organization.”   A past participant

The event is sponsored by the Vermont Lakes Region Cycling Club and the Poultney Rotary Club.  All funds raised benefit the Poultney Food Shelf and local educational projects sponsored by the Poultney Rotary Club.
